A substrate is the growing medium in which your plants take root. It not only provides stability but also plays a key role in water and nutrient uptake. There are many different types – from classic potting soil to mineral-based substrates like perlite to advanced specialty mixes like living soil. Each material has its own properties in terms of water retention, aeration, and nutrient content.
Potting soil and garden soil are the most commonly used substrates in horticulture. They usually consist of a mix of humus, compost, bark humus, and mineral additives such as sand or perlite. Expanded clay, also known as clay granules or hydroton, is a mineral substrate with many benefits: it ensures excellent drainage, prevents waterlogging, and improves root aeration. Expanded clay is especially common in hydroponics or as a drainage layer in pots.
