A substrate is the growing medium in which your plants take root. It not only provides stability but also plays a key role in water and nutrient uptake. There are many different types – from classic potting soil to mineral-based substrates like perlite to advanced specialty mixes like living soil. Each material has its own properties in terms of water retention, aeration, and nutrient content.

Potting soil and garden soil are the most commonly used substrates in horticulture. They usually consist of a mix of humus, compost, bark humus, and mineral additives such as sand or perlite. Perlite consists of small, white volcanic glass granules often found in soil mixes. They improve aeration and prevent compaction. Especially for delicate roots, perlite is ideal as it maintains a stable balance between air and moisture in the substrate.

Rockwool is made by spinning molten rock into fine fibers. It is widely used in professional plant production, especially in hydroponics, thanks to its ability to provide optimal water and nutrient distribution.

Living soil is full of microorganisms, fungi, and beneficial insects. It supplies plants with nutrients over the long term and mimics natural soil processes, making it perfect for organic cultivation without chemical additives.
