Guide: Finding the Right Plant Container

Choosing the right plant container depends on three factors: the plant itself, the location, and your care routine. If you water less frequently, a fabric pot or a hydroponic system is often a better choice than a traditional plant pot. If you want to save space, square plant pots are ideal, as they can be placed tightly next to each other without gaps. And if you grow multiple plants in a limited space, plant trays are the most practical solution.

Pot size also plays a crucial role: a container that is too small restricts root growth, while one that is too large can quickly lead to waterlogging. As a rule of thumb, the pot diameter – or the side length in the case of square pots – should be about one third of the plant’s height. The material determines how often you need to water and how forgiving the container is when it comes to care mistakes. Besides material and size, shape also matters: deep-rooted plants such as roses or oleanders require tall, narrow containers, while shallow-rooted plants like succulents or herbs perform better in wide, shallow pots.
