Lawn care in autumn: Get through the winter in good shape
Lawn clippings
When the soil temperature drops below 9°C, the lawn stops growing. This threshold is usually reached in October. Therefore, the last cut of the lawn should be made in September. This cut should not be shorter than 5 cm. If the grass is shorter over the winter, the frost can penetrate deeper into the soil and damage the roots.
Scarifying
Autumn dethatching is possible until the end of September. Care should be taken not to set the blades too low. The regeneration capacity of the roots is limited in autumn. Those who do not want to scarify in autumn should rake the lawn to remove the lawn thatch.
Fertilising
The autumn fertilisation should be calibrated. Nitrogen stimulates growth and makes the grass blades soft and susceptible to fungi and pests.
We recommend the following fertiliser for autumn fertilisation of your lawn:
Cultivalley basic slag potash
NPK : 0-8-15(6-3)
Application rate: 25 g/m²
Spread evenly, then water thoroughly!
- 0% N nitrogen
- 8% P2O5 water-soluble phosphorus
- 15% K2O water-soluble potassium oxide
- 6% MgO water-soluble magnesium oxide
- 3% S water-soluble sulphur
