Cannabis curing: what it is and why it's important

When you can finally harvest your marijuana plants after weeks of care, you're almost there. But before you can enjoy your buds, there's one more crucial step: curing. In this article, you'll learn what curing is, why it's important for cannabis and how to do it right.

What is curing?

Curing is the process by which freshly harvested cannabis flowers are slowly dried and then stored in a controlled environment to maximize their quality. The aim of curing is to remove the remaining moisture from the flowers, develop the aromas and increase potency.

Why is curing important?

Curing plays a crucial role in the quality of the end product. Here are some reasons why you should not skip this step:

  • Taste and aroma: Proper curing preserves and intensifies the terpenes in the flowers, resulting in a better taste and aroma.
  • Smoother smoke: Curing breaks down excess sugar and starch, which makes smoking more pleasant and reduces scratchiness in the throat.
  • Higher potency: During curation, some non-psychoactive cannabinoids convert into THC, which increases the psychoactive effect.
  • Longer shelf life: Cured cannabis has a longer shelf life and is less susceptible to mold and bacteria.

Step-by-step instructions for beginners

Step 1: Dry cannabis
  1. Harvest: Cut off the branches and remove the unwanted leaves.
  2. Hanging: Hang the branches upside down in a dark room with a temperature of 15-20 °C and a humidity of 45-55 %. A small fan helps to circulate the air.
  3. Drying: Leave the branches to dry for 1-2 weeks until the stems break easily when you bend them.
Step 2: Curing cannabis
  1. Preparation: Remove the buds from the thickest stems and fill them into airtight containers. Glass containers are ideal, but ceramic, metal, wood or plastic are also suitable. Fill the containers about 75% full so that the buds still have some air.
  2. Storage: Place the containers in a cool, dry and dark place.
  3. Airing: Open the containers several times a day for a few minutes during the first week to let the buds "breathe". Check the humidity inside the containers with a hygrometer (60-65% is ideal).
  4. Monitoring: Check regularly for mold and fungi. If there is an ammonia odor, the buds are not dry enough and may spoil.
  5. Maturation time: The buds are ready to smoke after 2-4 weeks, but a longer curing period of 4-8 weeks further improves flavor and potency. Some varieties need up to 6 months of curing.
  6. Storage: Properly cured cannabis can be stored in vacuum-sealed containers (e.g. TightVacs) and in a dark place for up to 2 years without deteriorating in quality.

Conclusion on curing

Curing is a crucial step in maximizing the quality of your cannabis. It not only improves the taste and aroma, but also the potency and shelf life of your buds. With patience and the right technique, you can ensure that your harvest is at its best. So take the time to curing - your marijuana will thank you!
